How We Do It

The owner of Gold 'n Pearl has been piercing ears for over 22 years. She has extensive experience with ear-piercing, having pierced thousands of ears! She has been trained by a dermatologist, has a dermatological certification, and can deal with many types of earring problems including impacted earrings and earring infections.

Basic Precautions

  • Infants should not have their ears pierced until they've had their first vaccinations against tetanus.
  • Should there be a birth-mark on the ear-lobe, one should first consult a dermatologist to see if piercing through the birth-mark is OK.
  • A lot of people have a small 'lump' in the ear-lobe. Piercing can be done through this lump.
  • Ear piercing should not be done if there is any infection in or around the ear-lobe.
  • We only use certified hypo-allergic studs for piercing (usually gold or stainless-steel). To see a selection of our piercing studs, click here.

Piercing

  • The ear-lobe is cleaned with alcohol or antiseptic solution.
  • A surgical marker is used to mark the position of the hole. (Such a marker won't leave a 'tattoo' if some of the ink enters the skin).
  • The customer is asked if she is happy with the location of the mark.
  • A sterile gun (with disposable earring grips) is used to pierce the ear-lobe and to insert the ring. This takes less than a second and is mostly painless.

After-Care

  • Turn the earring twice a day.
  • Do not remove the earring for at least 6 weeks.
  • Apply some ear-piercing gel / alcohol (or antibiotic cream) daily.
  • Do not insert a different earring for at least 2 months.
